Ask Bay Area businesswoman Tannis Kristjanson what the most formative experience in her life has been, and you’re sure to get more than one answer. Maybe it was growing up between the East and West coasts with her close-knit family, whose Icelandic roots instilled in her the value of strong family connections and cultural traditions. Growing up in a loving, supportive family gave Tannis the firm foundation from which she could pursue her dreams. Her journey began at Cal State Hayward where she eventually studied in the Master’s program in speech. After living in Los Angeles, Tannis saw the chance to move to Venezuela as a great new adventure. Her mind was opened to a new, cross-cultural perspective while living there, and she became fluent in Spanish, started her real estate career and became part of her community.

Sharing Knowledge
When the time came to return home, though, it was to the Bay Area she was drawn again. To Tannis, this was the ideal place to raise her son and daughter. As an active member of the community, avid bike rider, SCUBA diver, traveller and—most importantly—a devoted mother, Tannis sees every day as an opportunity to expand her own horizons, pursue her lifelong passion for learning and share her experience in order to make a difference for others. One of her greatest passions is her service as a member of the Board of the Education Foundation, which recognizes outstanding local teachers. “My teachers and my experience as a teacher have made a positive impact in my life,” she says. “It’s rewardng to be involved with a program that gives grants and acknowledgement to teachers.”
